A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
