The State of Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Tylenol Manufacturers Regarding Autism Allegations

Legal Case
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally seeking election to US Senate, alleged the drug companies of hiding safety concerns of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is taking legal action against the producers of Tylenol, alleging the firms hid safety concerns that the medication presented to pediatric cognitive development.

The court filing comes four weeks after Former President Trump promoted an unsubstantiated connection between taking Tylenol - also known as paracetamol - throughout gestation and autism in young ones.

Paxton is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which formerly manufactured the drug, the sole analgesic approved for women during pregnancy, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he stated they "misled consumers by profiting off of suffering and pushing pills ignoring the potential hazards."

The company asserts there is lacking scientific proof tying acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations lied for decades, deliberately risking numerous people to increase profits," Paxton, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer said in a statement that it was "very worried by the spread of false claims on the security of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the health of women and children in America."

On its website, the company also said it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is no credible data that demonstrates a verified association between taking acetaminophen and autism."

Associations acting on behalf of medical professionals and healthcare providers share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is among limited choices for expectant mothers to address pain and fever, which can create serious health risks if left untreated.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the utilization of acetaminophen in gestation, zero credible investigations has definitively established that the use of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in children," the organization stated.

This legal action cites recent announcements from the previous government in asserting the drug is allegedly unsafe.

Recently, Trump caused concern from public health officials when he advised expectant mothers to "resist strongly" not to consume Tylenol when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that medical professionals should think about restricting the consumption of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in minors has not been established.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism in a short period.

But specialists advised that discovering a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the result of a complicated interplay of inherited and surrounding conditions - would be difficult.

Autism is a type of lifelong neurodivergence and condition that affects how persons experience and relate to the world, and is recognized using physician assessments.

In his lawsuit, Paxton - a Trump ally who is running for US Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the research" around paracetamol and autism.

The case attempts to require the corporations "eliminate any marketing or advertising" that claims Tylenol is secure for women during pregnancy.

The Texas lawsuit mirrors the complaints of a group of guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the makers of Tylenol in recently.

The court threw out the case, saying studies from the family's specialists was lacking definitive proof.
