A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 people were detained.

Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community members have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, along with numerous weapons.
