Anthony Barry Explains The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach competed at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from the pitch to the sidelines commenced with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He had found his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career took him to top European clubs, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a systematic approach enabling us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says and the head coach as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and we must clarify it during that time. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the robustness, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to operate similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire for development is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he had concerns regarding the final talk, as his cohort featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into difficult settings he could find to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Chelsea was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London to rejoin him. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
