‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s road from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe debut appearance the Athletic striker played in the UK, an young playing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in British turf, against the English side following that, he converted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, sure enough, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “In fact,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed deal, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, the usual talk. I have no idea if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, Bilbao, the early training is about to start; following that, the short journey to Loiu and another flight to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, due in part to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in a long wait. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced the coach, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he went through a torn cruciate, dropped, a drop in category and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the senior squad but with every stage you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and my knee gave way.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”
You also have to play. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone in your position, a return could happen. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
