A Veteran Game Director's New Game That Looks Very Different But Expands Upon Familiar Concepts.
The acclaimed co-director behind The Last of Us is making a comeback to video games. This inventive adventure, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the first release of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it draws heavily from the legacy he helped create prioritizing dynamic AI partners.
A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure
Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. You guide a seasoned spellcaster, a character who challenges typical power fantasies. The core idea came from a goal to rethink the typical hero’s journey.
"What if you lacked combat prowess? What if you were somehow encumbered? What if you're an elderly woman?" posed the creative lead. "This felt incredibly compelling to think about the essence of heroism. Heroism involves persevering against obstacles, but also encompasses sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work
While the game looks different on the surface, its groundbreaking system evolves from of the work developed for The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from a key thought: "Is it possible to design Ellie even more reactive and adaptive in response to the user?"
Your strange critter partner within this adventure is far from a scripted follower. Straley describes it as a toddler that interacts through a multi-phase process. To begin with, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in playful hijinks. Next, it tries to copy what it sees. Ultimately, it watches and learns to learn how things work.
- For example: Should the beast observe an object being placed, it grasps the physical act absent the context.
- It will then attempt to collect random objects and try slotting them, copying the action.
- True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving an obstacle, teaching through experience.
Where Every Playthrough Differs
Such advanced AI seeks to generate a unique story for each player. Straley stresses that this project functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure rather than a scripted, action-heavy path.
"Anytime I tried more hardcore story beats into this game, the excitement fell apart," he stated. "The core appeal in this partnership is that every person who plays experiences personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."
This commitment to emergent, character-driven storytelling, this upcoming game marks simultaneously a refinement and a significant shift from the director’s legendary previous titles. The game remains in development for Windows PC.
